Some users have reported experiencing errors when setting up email in Dynamics 365 Business Central. The process as described by the Microsoft Documentation is as follows:
- Choose theicon, enterSMTP Email Setup, and then choose the related link.
- Fill in the fields as necessary. Hover over a field to read a short description.
- Alternatively, choose theApply Office 365 Server Settingsaction to insert any information that is already defined for your Office 365 subscription.
- When all the fields are correctly filled in, choose theTest Email Setupaction.
- When the test succeeds, close the window.

I may follow the steps above but when I click on Test Email Setup to send the test email; Dynamics 365 Business Central connects to the Office 365 email server but hits a snag on the way and returns an error. The error means that Dynamics 365 is not allowed to send direct emails on behalf of the user being setup. Here is what error looks like:
This error is reported by clients (as at 16 Nov 2018) on only specific users of Dynamics 365; some of the solutions that have worked include:
According to Microsoft Support; the cause is the Trial License (you would see that in your Office 35 Admin Centre, the license read “Dynamics 365 Business Central for IWS”, which essentially means the trial version). Microsoft Support suggests that the email option is only available in the paid version of Business Central (should be indicated when you sign up for the trial really but that’s what you end up finding out).
Finally; the work-around would be to create a new Office 365 user or use an existing user email that does not have a Business Central License assigned to them (or unassigned the license from the user you want the emails to go out from); then use that email address in the SMTP Mail Configuration; this should work for you. Comment below if it doesn’t; there are a few other possible tricks to try.

In addition, the Dynamics 365 Business Central Team Members SL includes some limited use write access to Dynamics 365 Business Central Essentials and Premium.
